Accreditation Timeline

The accreditation process with the Global Education Accrediting Commission (GEAC) typically takes between 12 to 18 months from the time an institution submits its application to the final accreditation decision, although it may be completed in as few as 3 months. The timeline may vary depending on the size and complexity of the institution, as well as any unique circumstances or challenges that may arise during the accreditation process. All institutions wishing to receive GEAC accreditation must hold GEAC institutional membership.

Here is a detailed timeline of the GEAC accreditation process:

1. Formal Application

Institutions formally apply to begin the accreditation process. As part of the application, institutions must share key information related to their institution, which aids the accreditation team in deciding which documents will be required for accreditation purposes.

2. Institutional Documentation Submission

Institutions submit structured documentation demonstrating compliance with GEAC standards, including governance, academic oversight, quality assurance systems, student support, and institutional effectiveness. Institutions retain full authority over curriculum, assessment, and awards.

3. Desk-Based Review

GEAC evaluators conduct a formal desk-based review of submitted materials to assess institutional readiness, strengths, risks, and alignment with accreditation standards. This stage determines eligibility to proceed to external peer review.

4. External Peer Review (Site Visit)

A trained peer review team conducts an external evaluation, including an on-site or virtual visit as appropriate. The review focuses on governance, leadership, teaching and learning systems, safeguarding, student support, and the effectiveness of internal quality assurance processes.

5. Accreditation Decision & Reporting

The Accreditation Committee reviews all findings and makes an independent accreditation decision in accordance with GEAC policies. If the institution's review was successful, they will need to become an institutional member in order for their accreditation to be activated.

6. Institutional Membership & Ongoing Engagement

Member institutions participate in ongoing engagement with GEAC, including periodic reporting and quality assurance check-ins designed to support institutional strengthening. Continued use of GEAC accreditation status is contingent upon active institutional membership and sustained alignment with GEAC standards. Membership provides access to professional development, guidance, and ongoing quality assurance support.
